Founded in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon in Stockholm, Sweden, Spotify was created to combat music piracy by offering a legal, convenient, and affordable streaming alternative. The platform launched in 2008 and revolutionized how the world listens to music. Today, Spotify is the world's largest audio streaming platform with over 600 million monthly active users and 240 million paying subscribers across 180+ markets. Beyond music, Spotify has invested heavily in podcasting, acquiring companies like Anchor and Gimlet Media, and has become the world's leading podcast platform. Spotify went public on the NYSE in April 2018 via a direct listing at a valuation of over $26 billion.
