Founded in 2012 by Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes, and Marcin Zukowski, Snowflake was built to solve the limitations of traditional data warehouses by separating storage from compute and building natively for the cloud. The company went public in September 2020 in what was the largest software IPO in history at the time, raising $3.4 billion and reaching a market cap of $70 billion on its first day of trading. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and Salesforce both invested in the IPO. Today Snowflake serves over 9,000 customers across financial services, healthcare, retail, and media, and has expanded into the Snowflake AI Data Cloud, offering a unified platform for data warehousing, data lakes, data engineering, and AI model development.
