Founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake in Ottawa, Canada, Shopify was born when Tobias tried to build an online snowboard shop and found that existing e-commerce software was terrible. So he built his own. That platform became Shopify. Today, Shopify powers over 4.4 million businesses in 175 countries and has processed more than $700 billion in total sales. It offers everything from online storefronts and payment processing to inventory management and fulfillment. Shopify went public on the NYSE and TSX in May 2015 and has since grown into one of Canada's most valuable companies, regularly competing with Amazon in the e-commerce infrastructure space.

Tobias Lütke

Founder / CEO

Tobias Lütke is the co-founder and CEO of Shopify. Born in Koblenz, Germany, Tobi dropped out of school at 16 to pursue a programming apprenticeship. He moved to Canada after falling in love with a Canadian woman he met while snowboarding. His frustration with poor e-commerce tools led him to build Shopify using Ruby on Rails. He even contributed back to the Rails open-source project along the way. Under his leadership, Shopify became one of the most valuable tech companies in Canada's history.
