PlanetScale
The database for developers.
Founded in 2018 by Jiten Vaidya and Sugu Sougoumarane in San Francisco, PlanetScale was built on Vitess — the open-source database clustering system originally created at YouTube to scale MySQL to billions of queries per day. PlanetScale makes the power of Vitess accessible to any developer through a beautiful developer experience, offering features like database branching (similar to Git branches for schema changes), non-blocking schema migrations, and a global edge network. The company raised $50 million in 2022 at a $1 billion valuation and became particularly popular with the Next.js and Rails developer communities. PlanetScale serves companies including GitHub, Square, and Slack for workloads requiring MySQL compatibility at hyperscale, and has processed over 600 billion queries per month at peak.
