Founded in 2014 by Jay Kreps, Neha Narkhede, and Jun Rao — the three original creators of Apache Kafka at LinkedIn — Confluent was built to commercialize and extend the massively popular open-source data streaming technology they invented. Apache Kafka had become the de facto standard for real-time data pipelines at companies like Netflix, Uber, and Goldman Sachs, and Confluent built a managed cloud service and enterprise platform on top of it. The company went public on NASDAQ in June 2021 raising $828 million, and serves over 5,000 customers including Walmart, Citibank, and BMW. Confluent generates over $900 million in annual recurring revenue and has become essential infrastructure for any company that needs to react to data in real time.
