Founded in 2021 by Jeff Thornburg and Jim Cantrell in Bothell, Washington, Portal Space Systems is solving one of the biggest limitations in modern satellite technology — once you put a satellite in orbit, it is essentially stuck there. On May 11, 2026, Portal announced a $50 million Series A to fund completion of its Supernova spacecraft for its first orbital demonstration mission.

Jeff Thornburg is the co-founder and CEO of Portal Space Systems. A veteran aerospace engineer, he previously served as Chief Engineer at SpaceX and held senior roles at Rocket Lab and Amazon's Project Kuiper.
